Trogir

Trogir is located between the island of Čiovo and the mainland between the stone and the plain fertile fields.
First reports of the Greek settlement Tragurion (a place of goat's pasture) date from the 2nd century BC. During the 1st century BC, the Greek-Illyrian settlement became a Roman town called Tragurium. The city was transformed from neighboring town to Salona to a metropolis of Dalmatia.
During the period of late antiquity, Christianity, already firmly entrenched in Salona, spreads in Tragurium. From Salona came the custom of worshiping Salona's bishop and martyr St. Dujam. There are numerous churches built then in the before Byzantine period not just in the city but throughout the countryside as well, dedicated to martyrs and apostles: st. Ciprijan, st. Andrija, st. Teodor, st. Martin, st. Eufemija... The monastery life has been maintained and had its present day on Čiovo has its foundations in late antiquity when monks and hermits gathered on this island, close to Trogir.
Tragurium experienced destruction during the Great migrations and the fall of the Roman Empire. Since the 7th, century Croatian population settled in and around the city and the municipality of Trogir slowly expanded due to the grants of the Croatian rulers, like the one from 1064 regarding the founding of the Benedictine monastery.
Since early 12th century to early 15th century Trogir was ruled, with short breaks by the Croatian-Hungarian kings. King Koloman in 1105 granted the charter to the city affirming its liberties.
